Volume IV Collection Essay
Volume IV is all sunsets.

I shoot a lot of sunsets. Most of them I delete. The Oregon Coast produces a sunset most evenings, and 95 percent of them are pretty in the way that pretty doesn't make a print. The 5 percent that do are usually the ones where something else is happening too — an inversion layer that throws the color back, a king tide that loads the foreground with foam, an unusual atmospheric event that compresses green and purple into the same frame, a flower carcass that turns into a metaphor on the last night of the year.

Six photographs in this Volume. Six end-of-day moments that did make it through the delete pass — for reasons that have less to do with the sunset itself than with whatever was happening underneath it.

If Volume III was about the things alive on the coast, Volume IV is about the part of the day they all retreat through.
