About
Newport's Yaquina Bay Bridge rarely asks to be found. Most mornings it simply stands there, green and familiar, a fixed point against whatever the sky decides to do. This morning, winter fog had reduced it to a single arc — barely present, backlit by a diffused light that moved along the span like something deliberate. The south side of the bay had opened into swirling mist, and the water below sat completely still.
I had the jetty to myself. The rocks, two gulls, a buoy marker, and the slow churn of fog above the surface. Then the boat appeared — an older-style fishing vessel emerging from the white on the left side of the frame, moving at the unhurried pace of something that had made this crossing before. For a brief window, every element occupied exactly the right position. The mast cleared the fog. The bridge held its partial reveal. The light stayed.
Three minutes, start to finish. This is a three-frame panorama shot handheld on a 50mm — a deliberate choice over a wide angle, which would have reduced the vessel to a footnote. At this focal length, the boat holds its weight in the frame. It belongs to the scene rather than existing at its edge. The blend was done by hand, under pressure, while the conditions were already closing in.
