One Step Every Five Minutes. Then Forty-Five More to Wait.
I took one step every five minutes for about an hour. That's how you get within 50 yards of a Pacific Brown Pelican without spooking it.
It had been foggy every morning for weeks. I drove to the South Jetty at Newport that day not knowing what I'd get. Low tide had brought roughly 200 pelicans to the shoreline — and when the sun finally came up clean, I spotted a group of twelve near the water's edge and started moving. One step. Wait. One more step. Wait.
When I was close enough, I set the tripod and waited another 45 minutes for the bird to take off. Two days at that location. 12,000 frames total. This series has sold more prints than anything else I've made. Pelicans are skittish, perfect light doesn't last, and getting both at the same moment takes the kind of patience that either breaks you or teaches you something.
