An Hour in the Dark for Eight Minutes of Perfect Light
Most people don't see the Oregon Coast at 5 a.m. Jeremy Burke does — because that's when the light starts to happen, and the hour before sunrise is the longest hour in photography.
He'd been set up along the central Oregon Coast for close to an hour, 500mm f/4 aimed at the water, waiting for the sun to clear the horizon. The Pacific Brown Pelican was already working the surface — banking low, reading the swells, cutting that razor line between wingtip and waterline that only pelicans pull off at full speed.
Then the sun came up.
The light went from gray to gold in minutes, and the pelican was right there in the middle of it — three inches off the water, doing exactly what it had been doing for thirty million years, now lit up like the whole coast had been waiting for this moment too.
Some shots you get lucky. This one took patience. And the reward was exactly the image he was there for.
