The Last Ride of a Legend. One Photographer Invited Along.
The CO called me personally. He said: it's going to be a day to remember, and you should be there to shoot it. He was right.
The Victory was a 52-foot USCG motor lifeboat — one of only five ever purpose-built for the Pacific Northwest, specifically engineered for heavy weather rescue. She was past her service life, too expensive to maintain, parts no longer available. This December day at South Beach Jetty in Newport was her last time in serious surf.
Commander Tom Malloy drove that day. On 30 to 40-foot wave faces, he put on a show. The Victory didn't go over waves the way modern boats do. She drove through them — disappearing into walls of water and coming out the other side. I was on the jetty with a long lens and no way to know if what I was watching was going to be the last time anyone ever saw this boat do what she was built to do.
This series reached five million views and was picked up by 800 publications. The boat is retired now. The big-wave training doesn't happen at this scale anymore. This moment existed once, and I was there when it did.
